Company History

In 1987, Howard and Wendy Huffman moved to Lincoln, Nebraska and established Huffman Engineering in a 600 sq. ft. office on North 48th Street. Howard Huffman thought he would do primarily electrical design work as the only full-time employee of Huffman Engineering.

Wendy Huffman learned to do accounting work and took the role of office assistant. The direction changed when the primary purchase order on which the company was founded was cancelled. Howard called on customers in the Lincoln area and began to establish Huffman Engineering, Inc. as an engineering and systems integration firm. Two of those customers continue to do work with Huffman Engineering, Inc. today. There was soon enough work to hire a part-time draftsman, and Howard Huffman did the controls design and programming.

The following year, having begun to build panels at a remote site to do complete integration controls work, Howard moved to a 2500 sq. ft. facility.

In 1996, the company moved to its current location, and its square footage increased by 10 times. Each move expanded the capacity Huffman Engineering had to handle more projects while those projects have become increasingly complex.

From the beginning, Howard Huffman saw the need to automate processes and retrieve data in order to make industrial and utility customers more efficient and profitable. Even the Huffman Engineering, Inc. logo demonstrates this vision. Turn the HEI on its side and the three letters form the image of a computer screen. The excitement of being able to make something work, and work well, is an
endorsement of the very nature of engineering. Other engineers came to Huffman Engineering, Inc. and caught the quality vision that makes the company what it is today.

Huffman Engineering Inc. engineers, many having their P.E.’s, along with degreed engineers, technicians, Project Managers, CAD and E-PLAN operators and administrative staff make Huffman Engineering a company that many have come to trust to offer excellent service at a fair price.

Started in Lincoln, Nebraska, Huffman Engineering expanded into Colorado in 2016 and grew into a larger CO office in 2018. Recognizing the need to serve customers in western Nebraska, the Colorado office allows Huffman Engineering, Inc. the ability to reach those customers in a timely manner, while developing new customers.

In 2022 HEI was named System Integrator of the Year, a global award recognized by Control Engineering and Plant Engineering magazine and WTWH publications. Subsequently they were inducted into the System Integrator Hall of Fame marking them as one of the foremost System Integration firms in the Midwest.

HEI officially opened an Omaha office in 2024 after having a presence there earlier in time and later that year kicked off the first OneTeam companywide event, taking after a long-held standing tradition HEI had of bringing the company together not just during the Christmas holiday season but also during the summer months.

The Lincoln facility boasts several conference rooms, individual offices where engineers can work on projects without interruption, a state-of the-art testing and training room, and over 10,000 sq. feet of shop area between the Lincoln and Denver offices. In fact, Huffman Engineering houses the oldest UL508A shop in Eastern Nebraska that is now also 698A certified and the Denver office is 508A certified as well.

Because Huffman Engineering is built on a vision of helping customers by providing quality engineered systems and services, personnel at Huffman Engineering are often working on and learning new technologies and applications. The atmosphere at Huffman Engineering is one of growth and learning. In early 2005, Huffman Engineering became the very first Control System Integrators Association (CSIA) certified company in Nebraska.

Even before being certified, Huffman Engineering joined CSIA in order to increase business acumen and provide a better
product to the customer. This certification exhibits Huffman Engineering’s desire to be a well-run company that will be around for many years.

2025 and 2026 brought a new level of data analytics to Huffman Engineering's internal processes and the first collaborative partnership with Rockwell Automation to bring MTP to the United States through COPA DATA. The trajectory is strong and the company from it's humble beginnings continues to grow.
