Description:
The Plant Operator performs work of moderate to considerable difficulty in operating a wastewater treatment plant in accordance with applicable laws, ordinances, and regulations. This is a career-broadbanded position. Incumbents are considered Essential Personnel and must work during public emergencies, hazardous conditions, or inclement weather.
Key Responsibilities:
Monitor, document, and optimize wastewater plant process controls (flow rates, chemical dosage, blower output, etc.).
Maintain compliance with state and federal wastewater treatment regulations.
Sample, collect, document, transport, and test wastewater, sludge, and biosolids.
Read and interpret gauges, meters, analyzers, and control panels.
Operate valves, pumps, gates, and other plant equipment.
Perform preventive maintenance and general housekeeping duties.
Use SCADA systems, PLCs, HMIs, computers, and mobile devices for plant operations.
Perform mathematical calculations related to treatment processes.
Participate in safety programs, training, and stormwater pollution prevention efforts.
Conduct regular inspections of plant facilities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Wastewater treatment processes and laboratory testing methods.
SCADA systems and computerized maintenance management systems.
Safety principles and PPE usage.
Strong mathematical skills (algebra, geometry).
Ability to safely use hand tools.
Knowledge of laboratory equipment (spectrophotometers, probes, incubators, ovens).
Requirements
Minimum Training and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED.
Valid drivers license.
Knowledge of wastewater treatment techniques.
Preferred Training and Experience:
Class 3 Virginia Wastewater Works Operator License.
At least one year of wastewater treatment plant operations experience.
Experience in utility plant maintenance.
Microsoft Office proficiency.
Completion of wastewater treatment training courses.
Licensing, Certifications, and Special Requirements:
Zone I: High School Diploma/GED. Must obtain Class 4 Wastewater Works Operator License within 9 months and Class 3 License within 18 months.
Zone II: Class 4 License required; must obtain Class 3 within 9 months.
Zone III: Class 3 License required.
Zone IV: Class 2 License required.
Zone V: Class 1 License required.
Failure to obtain required licenses within specified timeframes will result in termination.
